How Much Paint Do I Need for a 2BHK or 3BHK Home? Complete Paint Quantity Guide

You have decided to paint your house. The colours are almost final, the painter is ready, and then comes the next question: how many litres should you actually buy?

If you are checking how much paint is required for a 2BHK, don’t decide the quantity just by looking at the size of the flat. Two 2BHK homes can need different amounts of paint. One may have larger rooms, another may have higher ceilings, and another may need more work because the walls are old.

Before buying paint, check four things: the actual paintable wall area, the coverage of the selected paint, the number of coats required and the condition of the surface. These factors can make a noticeable difference to the final quantity, even when two homes have the same BHK configuration.

Paint Quantity for a 1BHK, 2BHK or 3BHK

Take two 2BHK homes. One has a compact hall and small bedrooms. The other has a large living room, wider bedrooms and a dining area. Both are called 2BHK, but the wall area is clearly not the same.

The condition of those walls also changes the requirement. A smooth wall that is being repainted may not have the same requirement as fresh plaster or a wall that needs repair and preparation.

The same goes for how much paint is required for a 3BHK. Start with the actual area you are going to paint instead of choosing a quantity based only on the number of rooms.

How to Calculate Paint Quantity from Your Wall Area

You can do a basic calculation with a measuring tape and the coverage information given for the paint.

Measure the length and height of the wall.

Length × Height = Wall area

Do this for each wall that needs painting and add the areas together. Large doors and windows can be deducted from the total. Now check how much area one litre of your chosen paint is expected to cover. You will normally find this information on the product details.

A basic paint quantity calculator works on the same idea:

Total paintable area × number of coats ÷ coverage per litre

Suppose you have 2,000 sq ft of paintable wall area. If the selected paint gives around 100 sq ft coverage per litre for one coat, you would calculate roughly 20 litres for one coat and 40 litres for two coats.

Don’t treat that 40-litre figure as the final quantity for every 2,000 sq ft job. The actual usage depends on the paint and the wall.

Paint Required per Square Feet and Paint Coverage per Litre

If your house is 1,000 sq ft, that does not mean you have only 1,000 sq ft to paint. That number usually refers to floor area. Once you count all four walls of each room, and perhaps the ceilings too, the paintable area is much larger.

So when checking paint required per square feet, first make sure you are working with the wall area and not simply the floor area of the house.

Paint coverage per litre also changes between products. A smooth, previously painted wall may take paint differently from a rough or porous surface.

If you are looking at interior wall paints for home, check the coverage given for the particular paint you plan to buy.

How Many Litres Do You Need for 1000 Sq Ft?

If a particular paint covers around 100 sq ft per litre for one coat, the basic calculation comes to around 10 litres. If the job needs two coats, it becomes around 20 litres.

A rough wall can absorb more. Changing from a dark shade to a light shade can affect the work involved. There may also be some paint loss during application.

Use the calculation to plan the purchase, then compare it with the instructions for the paint you have selected and the condition of your walls.

How Many Coats Will Your Walls Need?

Repainting a wall in a similar colour usually takes less preparation, especially when the existing surface is in good condition. Changing a dark wall to a much lighter colour is different, as the old shade may need to be covered properly before the new colour gives the finish you want.

For newly plastered walls, surface preparation comes first. The wall should be ready for painting before primer and finish coats are applied.

Exterior walls need to be calculated separately from interior walls because the products and application requirements are different. When choosing Exterior wall paints for home, check the coverage and application details of the paint you plan to use before deciding how many litres to buy.

What About Primer and Wall Putty?

Putty is used when the wall needs surface correction and a smoother base. A wall with more uneven areas may need more putty than one that is already in good condition.

Primer is applied as part of the preparation before the finish coats. How much you need depends on the product and the wall surface.

If you are painting a newly built home, ask the painter to check the walls before buying all three materials in bulk. That gives you a better idea of what the surface actually needs.

Buying the Right Quantity Without Wasting Paint

Measure first. Buy second. It sounds obvious, but many people do the opposite. They tell the shop they have a 2BHK or 3BHK and ask for a general quantity. That number might be close, but it may also leave them short halfway through the job or with an unopened bucket at the end.

Look at real paint shade images, compare physical shade cards and, when possible, test the colour on a small part of the actual wall. Check it during the day and again under your room lights. If you are buying from the best paint shop in Tirunelveli, take your measurements and wall details when you visit APE Paints.

When someone asks how much paint is required for a 2BHK, the useful answer isn’t one fixed number. Measure the walls, check the coverage of the paint you want, decide the number of coats and look at the wall condition. Those four details will get you much closer to the quantity you actually need.

Is 20 litres of paint enough for a 2BHK?

It depends on the wall area, paint coverage, surface and number of coats. Calculate the paintable area before deciding.

How do I calculate paint for a 3BHK?

Measure the walls you want to paint, add the total area and calculate it using the coverage of your chosen paint and planned number of coats.

Does 1000 sq ft mean I have 1000 sq ft to paint?

Not necessarily. A 1,000 sq ft home usually refers to floor area. Your total wall area will be different.

Do new walls need primer?

New walls generally need proper surface preparation before finish paint. Follow the primer and painting system recommended for the surface and product being used.

Should I buy all the paint at once?

Once the area, shade and product are confirmed, buying the planned quantity together can help with consistency. Keep a small amount aside for future touch-ups.
